The mentioned BIRT related tools can be grouped into two classes:

  • Core functions - free download
    • Logging, inMemory buffer managment
  • Options - rely on the core functions and are commercial BIRT improvements
    • Data Manager to allow ETL processing and handling the SQL workload in the database
    • Output of sophisticated Microsoft Excel sheets (XLS, XLSX) 
    • Text formatting based on Styles (CSS)
    • Barcode usage in reports and documents
